At least 23 distinct versions of IFN-alpha exist. The individual components have molecular weights ranging between 19 and 26 kilodaltons, with proteins of lengths of 156-166 and 172 amino acids. The conserved amino acid sequence region between amino acid positions 115-151 is shared by all IFN-alpha subtypes. The different subtypes of IFN-alpha differ by only one or two nucleotide positions. Proteins truncated by 10 amino acids at the carboxy-terminal end are also known as natural variants.
