Description

5-HTP ELISA Kit

5-HTP ELISA kits are used to detect 5-Hydroxytryptophan (5-HTP) in serum, plasma and other biological samples. 5-HTP, or 5-hydroxytryptophan, is an aromatic amino acid formed from the essential amino acid tryptophan by tryptophan hydroxylase, the rate-limiting step in serotonin biosynthesis. It is then decarboxylated by aromatic L-amino acid decarboxylase to give serotonin, which in turn is the precursor of melatonin. Unlike serotonin, 5-HTP can cross the blood-brain barrier, so it acts as a means of raising central serotonin synthesis. It is also found naturally in the seeds of the plant Griffonia simplicifolia. Altered serotonin pathway activity has been associated with depression, sleep disorders and migraine, and 5-HTP has been investigated as a supplement for such conditions, so it is studied in neurochemistry and metabolism research.
