Description

Human ASMT ELISA Kit

Human ASMT ELISA kits are used to detect Acetylserotonin-O-Methyltransferase (ASMT) in tissue homogenates, cell lysates and other biological samples. ASMT (acetylserotonin O-methyltransferase, also hydroxyindole O-methyltransferase or HIOMT) is the final enzyme in melatonin biosynthesis, catalyzing transfer of a methyl group onto N-acetylserotonin to produce melatonin (N-acetyl-5-methoxytryptamine). It is expressed mainly in the pineal gland, where melatonin synthesis follows a circadian rhythm that rises at night, and also in the retina and some other tissues. Some alternative isoforms lack enzymatic activity. Melatonin regulates circadian rhythms, sleep and seasonal reproduction, and variants and reduced ASMT activity have been associated with low melatonin levels and with autism spectrum disorder and other neuropsychiatric conditions, so ASMT is studied in chronobiology and neurodevelopment.
