Description

Human CALB ELISA Kit

Human CALB ELISA kits are used to detect Calbindin (CALB) in serum, plasma, tissue homogenates and other biological samples. CALB, or calbindin-D28k, is a cytosolic EF-hand calcium-binding protein of about 28 kDa, expressed at high levels in specific neuronal populations such as cerebellar Purkinje cells, in the kidney distal tubule and in the intestine of some species and the pancreas. It acts as a calcium buffer and sensor, shaping intracellular calcium transients and protecting cells from excess calcium, and it may stimulate membrane calcium-ATPase and cyclic nucleotide phosphodiesterase activity. Its expression is dependent on vitamin D in some tissues. Because it marks defined neuronal subtypes, it is widely used in neuroanatomy. Loss of calbindin has been associated with neurodegenerative conditions such as Alzheimer disease, Huntington disease and ataxia, and with calcium handling disorders.
