Description

Human CDT ELISA Kit

Human CDT ELISA kits are used to detect Carbohydrate-deficient transferrin (CDT) in serum, plasma, tissue homogenates and other biological samples. CDT, or carbohydrate-deficient transferrin, comprises glycoforms of the iron-transport protein transferrin that carry fewer terminal sialic acid residues on their N-linked glycan chains than normal. Transferrin is made in the liver and carries iron in the blood. Heavy alcohol consumption over a period of one to two weeks or more is thought to impair glycosylation of the protein, so that the proportion of CDT rises, and levels fall again within a few weeks of abstinence. CDT is therefore used as a biomarker of chronic excessive alcohol intake. Increased values may also occur in congenital disorders of glycosylation and in some severe liver diseases, so it is studied in alcohol research and metabolic disease.
