Description

Human CK-18 ELISA Kit (Small Sample Volume)

Human CK-18 ELISA kits are used to detect Cytokeratin 18 (CK-18) in tissue homogenates, cell lysates and other biological samples. CK-18, cytokeratin 18 (keratin 18), is a type I intermediate filament protein expressed in simple epithelial cells such as hepatocytes, intestinal and pancreatic epithelium and many carcinomas. It pairs with its type II partner keratin 8 to form filaments that give epithelial cells mechanical stability and resilience. During apoptosis CK-18 is cleaved by caspases, releasing fragments such as M30 that can be detected in the circulation, while necrosis releases the intact protein. Circulating CK-18 fragments have been associated with liver injury, non-alcoholic steatohepatitis and tumour cell turnover, so CK-18 is used as a marker of epithelial cell death.
