Description

Human DEFb126 ELISA Kit

Human DEFb126 ELISA kits are used to detect Defensin Beta 126 (DEFb126) in serum, plasma, tissue homogenates, cell lysates, cell culture supernatants and other biological samples. DEFb126 is a highly glycosylated, atypical beta-defensin secreted by the epididymis and attached to the sperm surface, where it forms part of the glycocalyx. Its negatively charged O-linked oligosaccharides help sperm to travel through the female reproductive tract and shield them from immune detection, and they allow sperm to bind oviductal epithelial cells and form a reservoir until ovulation. DEFb126 is released from sperm during capacitation, which unmasks other surface components needed for penetration of the cumulus matrix and binding to the zona pellucida. It also has antimicrobial activity in vitro, and truncating variants have been associated with reduced sperm motility and impaired fertility.
