Human DIO1 / Deiodinase, Iodothyronine, Type I ELISA Kit

The iodothyronine deiodinase family includes the protein encoded by DIO1. It catalyses the activation and inactivation of thyroid hormone by deiodination of the outer and inner rings, respectively. The activation reaction involves the 5'-deiodination of the thyroid gland's prohormone thyroxine (3,5,3',5'-tetraiodothyronine, T4) to the bioactive thyroid hormone (3,5,3'-triiodothyronine, T3). DIO1 is responsible for the majority of circulating T3, which is required for vertebrate growth, differentiation, and basal metabolism. DIO1 is a selenoprotein, and its active site contains the rare amino acid selenocysteine (Sec). The UGA codon, which normally signals the end of a translation, encodes Sec. Euthyroid Sick Syndrome and Hypothyroidism are two diseases linked to DIO1. Amine-derived hormones and Folate Metabolism are two related pathways to DIO1.
