Human DIO3 / Deiodinase, Iodothyronine, Type III ELISA Kit

The iodothyronine deiodinase family includes the protein encoded by DIO3. It catalyses the inner ring deiodination of the prohormone thyroxine (T4) and the bioactive hormone 3,3',5-triiodothyronine (T3) to inactive metabolites 3,3',5'-triiodothyronine (RT3) and 3,3'-diiodothyronine (T2), respectively, to inactivate thyroid hormone. DIO3 is highly expressed in the placenta, foetal, and neonatal tissues of pregnant women, and it is thought to protect developing foetal tissues from adult thyroid hormone levels. It regulates foetal thyroid hormone concentrations in the bloodstream and thus plays an important role in mammalian development. Increased activity of DIO3 in infants with hemangiomas causes severe hypothyroidism. DIO3 is a selenoprotein, meaning it contains the rare amino acid selenocysteine at its active site. Hypothyroidism and Neonatal Thyrotoxicosis are two diseases linked to DIO3.
