Description

Human FECH ELISA Kit

Human FECH ELISA kits are used to detect Ferrochelatase (FECH) in tissue homogenates, cell lysates and other biological samples. FECH, ferrochelatase, is a mitochondrial enzyme located on the matrix side of the inner membrane that catalyses the insertion of ferrous iron into protoporphyrin IX. This is the terminal step in the heme biosynthetic pathway, producing the heme that is needed for hemoglobin, myoglobin, cytochromes and many other hemoproteins, and the enzyme contains an iron-sulfur cluster. Reduced FECH activity causes erythropoietic protoporphyria, an inherited porphyria with onset usually in childhood, marked by excessive protoporphyrin in erythrocytes, plasma, liver and faeces, and by painful photosensitive skin changes. FECH is therefore studied in heme metabolism, porphyrias and iron utilisation, and its level may reflect the capacity for heme synthesis.
