Description

Human GALK1 ELISA Kit

Human GALK1 ELISA kits are used to detect Galactokinase 1 (GALK1) in tissue homogenates, cell lysates and other biological samples. GALK1, or galactokinase, is a cytosolic enzyme that catalyses the first committed step of galactose catabolism in the Leloir pathway. It transfers a phosphate group from ATP to alpha-D-galactose, producing galactose-1-phosphate, which is then converted into glucose-1-phosphate for use in energy metabolism. This allows dietary galactose, derived largely from lactose, to be used by the body. Inherited deficiency of GALK1 causes galactosemia type 2, an autosomal recessive disorder of galactose metabolism in which galactose and galactitol accumulate, with cataract formation as a characteristic early feature and, in some cases, neonatal liver and metabolic problems. GALK1 is therefore of interest in newborn screening and carbohydrate metabolism research.
