Description

Human GM2A ELISA Kit (Small Sample Volume)

Human GM2A ELISA kits are used to detect GM2 Ganglioside Activator (GM2A) in serum, plasma, tissue homogenates and other biological samples. GM2A is a small lysosomal lipid-binding protein that works as a cofactor for the degradation of gangliosides. It lifts individual GM2 ganglioside molecules out of intralysosomal membranes and presents them in soluble form to beta-hexosaminidase A, which removes the terminal N-acetylgalactosamine to form GM3. GM2A also assists the breakdown of the related glycolipid GA2 and can bind other lipids, including phospholipids and fatty acids. Because the enzyme cannot act on membrane-embedded GM2 alone, loss of GM2A function causes GM2 ganglioside to accumulate in neurons. This underlies GM2-gangliosidosis AB variant, a rare neurodegenerative lysosomal storage disorder resembling Tay-Sachs disease.
