Description

Human HPX ELISA Kit

Human HPX ELISA kits are used to detect Hemopexin (HPX) in serum, plasma and other biological samples. HPX, hemopexin, is a plasma glycoprotein produced mainly by the liver that has the highest known affinity of any protein for free heme. It binds heme released during haemolysis or tissue damage and carries it to hepatocytes, where the complex is taken up by receptor-mediated endocytosis, heme is broken down and iron is recovered, and the hemopexin is then released back into the circulation. By clearing this pro-oxidant, potentially toxic molecule, hemopexin protects tissues from oxidative damage and limits iron availability to bacteria. Reduced levels are seen in haemolytic anaemias such as sickle cell disease and in other conditions involving heme release, so hemopexin is used as a marker of haemolysis.
