Description

Human Melanin ELISA Kit

Human Melanin ELISA kits are used to detect Melanin in serum, plasma, tissue homogenates, cell lysates, cell culture supernatants and other biological samples. Melanin is a group of dark, high-molecular-weight biological pigments formed by the oxidation and polymerisation of tyrosine and related phenolic compounds, a process driven by the enzyme tyrosinase in melanosomes of melanocytes. The two main types are brown-black eumelanin and the reddish-yellow, sulfur-containing pheomelanin, and a related pigment, neuromelanin, is found in some neurons of the brain. Melanin determines the colour of skin, hair and eyes, and it absorbs ultraviolet radiation, scavenges free radicals and so protects cells from DNA damage. Altered melanin synthesis is seen in albinism, vitiligo and melasma, melanin is a marker for melanoma, and the loss of neuromelanin-containing neurons is characteristic of Parkinson disease.
