Description

Human NIS ELISA Kit

Human NIS ELISA kits are used to detect Sodium Iodide Symporter (NIS) in serum, plasma, tissue homogenates, cell lysates and other biological samples. NIS, the sodium iodide symporter encoded by SLC5A5, is an integral membrane glycoprotein that moves iodide into cells against its concentration gradient by coupling it to the sodium gradient. It is located on the basolateral membrane of thyroid follicular cells, where it carries out the first step of thyroid hormone synthesis, and it is also found in the salivary glands, stomach, lactating mammary gland and other tissues. It can transport other anions such as perchlorate, chlorate, thiocyanate and nitrate. Loss-of-function variants cause congenital hypothyroidism through thyroid dyshormonogenesis. NIS also underlies radioiodine imaging and therapy of thyroid cancer, and its expression in other tumours, such as breast cancer, has made it a topic of interest in imaging and gene therapy research.
