Description

Human PL ELISA Kit

Human PL ELISA kits are used to detect Placental Lactogen (PL) in serum, plasma, tissue homogenates and other biological samples. PL, or placental lactogen, is a peptide hormone of the growth hormone and prolactin family, also known as chorionic somatomammotropin hormone, produced by the syncytiotrophoblast of the placenta and secreted only during pregnancy. It acts by activating the prolactin receptor, through zinc-induced receptor dimerisation, rather than the growth hormone receptor. PL stimulates mammary gland development and lactation and promotes fetal growth, and it alters maternal metabolism by reducing insulin sensitivity so that more glucose and free fatty acids are available to the fetus. Circulating levels rise through gestation in proportion to placental mass, so PL has been used as an indicator of placental function, and unusually low levels have been associated with placental insufficiency.
