Description

Human Slc26a5 ELISA Kit (Small Sample Volume)

Human Slc26a5 ELISA kits are used to detect Prestin (Slc26a5) in tissue homogenates and other biological samples. Slc26a5, or prestin, is a member of the solute carrier family 26 and a voltage-sensitive motor protein found in the lateral membrane of outer hair cells of the cochlea. It converts changes in the transmembrane electric potential into mechanical movement, called electromotility, that makes the outer hair cells change length and thereby amplifies sound in the hearing organ. Two models compete to explain its voltage sensing, one involving intracellular chloride as an extrinsic sensor and the other relying on charged residues within the protein. Loss of function of prestin is associated with autosomal recessive non-syndromic sensorineural hearing loss, and it is studied as a marker of outer hair cell function and as a target in research on hearing disorders.
