Description

Human SOD ELISA Kit

Human SOD ELISA kits are used to detect Super Oxidase Dimutase (SOD) in serum, plasma, tissue homogenates and other biological samples. SOD, or superoxide dismutase, is a family of antioxidant metalloenzymes that catalyse the dismutation of the superoxide radical into molecular oxygen and hydrogen peroxide, and so form a first line of defence against reactive oxygen species. In mammals there are three forms, the copper-zinc enzyme SOD1 in the cytosol, the manganese enzyme SOD2 in mitochondria and the extracellular copper-zinc enzyme SOD3. The hydrogen peroxide produced is then removed by catalase and peroxidases. SOD activity or concentration may change in oxidative stress, inflammation, cardiovascular disease, diabetes and ageing, and mutations in SOD1 cause some familial forms of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, so SOD is widely measured as an indicator of antioxidant capacity.
