Description

Human SORD / Sorbitol Dehydrogenase ELISA

The SORD (sorbitol dehydrogenase) enzyme participates in the conversion of polyols and ketoses, as well as aldose reductase, which composes the sorbitol pathway, which is believed to play a role in diabetic complications. The reduction of glucose to sorbitol by ALDR1 with NADPH as the cofactor is the first step in the polyol pathway. SORD then oxidizes the sorbitol to fructose, utilizing the NAD(+) cofactor. Sorbitol dehydrogenase deficiency with peripheral neuropathy and diabetic neuropathy are examples of SORD-related disorders. Glycosaminoglycan metabolism and fructose metabolism are two pathways influenced by SORD.
