Description

Human UCP1 ELISA

Mitochondrial uncoupling proteins (UCP) are members of the family of mitochondrial anion carrier proteins (MACP). UCP1 (Uncoupling Protein 1) is only expressed in brown adipose tissue, which is a specialized tissue that generates heat. A function of UCPs is the separation of oxidative phosphorylation from ATP synthesis via energy dissipated as heat; also known as mitochondrial proton leak. UCPs also allow anions to move from the inner to the outer mitochondrial membrane and protons to flow in the opposite direction, reducing the mitochondrial membrane potential in mammalian cells. The mechanisms by which the various UCPs move H+/OH- are yet unknown. Lipomatosis, multiple symmetric and lipomatosis are some of the diseases linked to UCP1. Mesenchymal stem cells and lineage-specific markers, as well as mitochondrial uncoupling proteins, are all UCP1 related pathways. Oxidative phosphorylation uncoupler activity is a feature of the gene ontology (GO) annotations for UCP1. UCP3 is a paralog of UCP1.
