Description

Mouse BTD ELISA Kit (Small Sample Volume)

Mouse BTD ELISA kits are used to detect Biotinidase (BTD) in serum, plasma, tissue homogenates and other biological samples. BTD, biotinidase, is an enzyme that catalyses the release of biotin from biocytin, the product of the breakdown of biotin-dependent carboxylases. This recycling of biotin makes the vitamin available again for use as a cofactor by carboxylases involved in fatty acid synthesis, gluconeogenesis and amino acid catabolism. The enzyme is present in serum and in many tissues, and it also releases biotin from dietary protein-bound sources. Variants in the gene cause biotinidase deficiency, a juvenile form of multiple carboxylase deficiency, which is characterised by seizures, hypotonia, skin rash, alopecia, ataxia, hearing loss and ketoacidosis if untreated. Because deficiency is treatable with biotin supplementation, BTD activity is included in many newborn screening programmes.
