Description

Mouse HCy ELISA Kit

Mouse HCy ELISA kits are used to detect Homocysteine (HCy) in serum, plasma and other biological samples. Homocysteine is a sulfur-containing, non-protein amino acid formed as an intermediate in the metabolism of methionine. It is either remethylated back to methionine, a reaction needing folate and vitamin B12, or converted to cysteine through the transsulfuration pathway, which depends on vitamin B6. Because of these links, its blood concentration reflects the status of these vitamins and the activity of enzymes such as MTHFR and cystathionine beta-synthase. Elevated homocysteine has been associated with endothelial dysfunction, oxidative stress and increased risk of atherosclerosis, thrombosis, stroke and neurodegenerative disease, and extreme elevation occurs in inherited homocystinuria. Homocysteine is therefore used as a biomarker in cardiovascular, nutritional and neurological research.
