Description

Rat aFP ELISA Kit

Rat aFP ELISA kits are used to detect Alpha-Fetoprotein (aFP) in serum, plasma, tissue homogenates and other biological samples. aFP, or alpha-fetoprotein, is a major plasma protein of the developing fetus, produced first by the yolk sac and then by the fetal liver, and it is related to albumin. It binds copper, nickel and fatty acids, and bilirubin less well than albumin does, and it acts as a carrier protein during fetal development. Levels fall sharply after birth, so AFP is normally low in adults. Raised levels in the blood of adults may be associated with hepatocellular carcinoma and germ cell tumours, and AFP is a long-established tumour marker. In pregnancy, altered concentrations in maternal serum or amniotic fluid are used in screening for neural tube defects and some chromosomal abnormalities.
