Description

Rat Bb ELISA Kit

Rat Bb ELISA kits are used to detect Bilirubin (Bb) in serum, plasma and other biological samples. Bb, bilirubin, is a yellow-orange tetrapyrrole pigment generated from the breakdown of haem, mainly from the haemoglobin of senescent red blood cells, through the actions of haem oxygenase and biliverdin reductase. In this form it is unconjugated, poorly soluble in water and carried in blood bound to albumin. In the liver, uridine diphosphate glucuronosyltransferase 1A1 conjugates it with glucuronic acid, which makes it water soluble for excretion in bile. Bilirubin is also a potent antioxidant. Raised levels cause jaundice and may reflect haemolysis, impaired conjugation, hepatocellular damage or biliary obstruction, and in newborns very high unconjugated bilirubin can cross the blood-brain barrier and cause kernicterus, so it is a standard marker of liver function.
