Description

Rat EIF2S1 ELISA Kit

Rat EIF2S1 ELISA kits are used to detect Eukaryotic translation initiation factor 2 subunit 1 (EIF2S1) in tissue homogenates and other biological samples. EIF2S1 (eukaryotic translation initiation factor 2 subunit 1, also called eIF2 alpha) is the alpha subunit of the heterotrimeric eIF2 complex and is expressed in all cells. Bound to GTP, eIF2 delivers the initiator methionyl-tRNA to the 40S ribosomal subunit to form the 43S pre-initiation complex, which is a rate-controlling step in protein synthesis. Phosphorylation of EIF2S1 at serine 51 by stress-activated kinases such as PERK, PKR, GCN2 and HRI blocks recycling of eIF2, reducing global translation while favouring selected mRNAs such as ATF4, a core feature of the integrated stress response. EIF2S1 phosphorylation is thus widely used as a marker of endoplasmic reticulum stress and cellular stress, and it is implicated in neurodegeneration, metabolic disease and cancer.
