Description

Rat fT4 ELISA Kit

Rat fT4 ELISA kits are used to detect Free Thyroxine (fT4) in serum, plasma, tissue homogenates, cell lysates, cell culture supernatants and other biological samples. fT4, free thyroxine, is the unbound fraction of the thyroid hormone thyroxine (T4), representing a very small proportion of the total circulating hormone, with the rest bound to thyroxine-binding globulin, transthyretin and albumin. T4 is the main hormone secreted by the thyroid gland under control of pituitary TSH, and only the free portion is available to enter cells, where it is converted to the more active triiodothyronine and regulates gene expression. Thyroid hormones control metabolic rate, heat production, growth, heart function and brain development. Because fT4 is not influenced by changes in binding protein concentrations, it is a reliable indicator of thyroid function, with low values typical of hypothyroidism and high values of hyperthyroidism.
