Description

Rat FTH ELISA Kit

Rat FTH ELISA kits are used to detect Ferritin, Heavy Polypeptide (FTH) in serum, plasma, tissue homogenates, cell lysates, cell culture supernatants and other biological samples. FTH, or ferritin heavy chain, is one of the two subunits, along with the light chain, that assemble into the hollow 24-subunit shell of the iron storage protein ferritin. The heavy chain carries ferroxidase activity, which oxidizes ferrous iron to the ferric form so that iron can be deposited as a safe, non-toxic mineral core that can be mobilized when cells need it. Ferritin therefore buffers intracellular iron, limits iron-driven oxidative damage and is a central part of iron homeostasis. FTH expression is regulated by iron through iron regulatory proteins, and variants in the 5' untranslated region of the gene have been associated with iron overload.
