Description

Rat HCII ELISA Kit

Rat HCII ELISA kits are used to detect Heparin Cofactor II (HCII) in plasma and other biological samples. HCII, or heparin cofactor II (serpin D1), is a plasma serine protease inhibitor of the serpin family, synthesised mainly in the liver. It inhibits thrombin, and its activity is greatly increased by the glycosaminoglycans heparin and dermatan sulfate, which are found in the vessel wall. In the presence of dermatan sulfate it becomes the predominant thrombin inhibitor in place of antithrombin, so it is thought to regulate thrombin in the extravascular tissue after vessel injury. Reduced HCII activity has been associated with increased thrombotic risk in some studies, and lower levels have been linked to atherosclerosis, coronary disease and the progression of vascular injury, so heparin cofactor II is studied in coagulation and cardiovascular research.
