Description

Rat MGP ELISA Kit

Rat MGP ELISA kits are used to detect Matrix Gla Protein (MGP) in serum, plasma, tissue homogenates, cell lysates, cell culture supernatants and other biological samples. MGP, matrix Gla protein, is a small vitamin K-dependent protein that associates with the organic matrix of bone and cartilage and is also produced by vascular smooth muscle cells and chondrocytes. Its glutamate residues undergo gamma-carboxylation and its serine residues are phosphorylated, and these modifications are needed for it to act as a potent inhibitor of tissue calcification, including in the arterial wall and cartilage. It is also thought to act as an inhibitor of bone formation. Variants in the gene cause Keutel syndrome, with abnormal cartilage calcification, peripheral pulmonary stenosis, hearing loss and midfacial hypoplasia. Circulating inactive forms of MGP have been associated with vascular calcification and cardiovascular risk.
