Description

Rat MT ELISA Kit

Rat MT ELISA kits are used to detect Melatonin (MT) in cell lysates and other biological samples. MT, or melatonin, is an indoleamine hormone synthesised from tryptophan via serotonin, with N-acetylserotonin as the immediate precursor. It is produced mainly by the pineal gland in a circadian pattern, with levels low during daylight and high during darkness, and is controlled by light input through the suprachiasmatic nucleus. Melatonin acts on the G protein-coupled receptors MT1 and MT2 to synchronise circadian rhythms and the sleep-wake cycle, and in many species it conveys day-length information that regulates seasonal reproduction. It is also a potent antioxidant and has immunomodulatory effects. Measuring melatonin is used to study circadian phase, sleep disorders, jet lag and shift work, as well as seasonal breeding in livestock.
