Description

Rat OC ELISA Kit

Rat OC ELISA kits are used to detect Osteocalcin (OC) in serum, plasma, tissue homogenates, cell lysates and other biological samples. OC, also known as osteocalcin or bone Gla protein, is a small protein secreted by osteoblasts and is one of the most abundant non-collagenous components of the bone matrix. In its gamma-carboxylated form it binds strongly to calcium and apatite and helps limit bone formation, whereas the uncarboxylated form acts as a hormone. This hormonal form promotes pancreatic beta-cell proliferation, insulin secretion and sensitivity, and energy expenditure, stimulates testosterone production in the testes, and supports brain development. OC levels are widely used as a marker of bone turnover and osteoblast activity, and may change in osteoporosis, metabolic bone disease and disorders of glucose metabolism.
