Description

Rat SPB ELISA Kit

Rat SPB ELISA kits are used to detect Surfactant Associated Protein B (SPB) in tissue homogenates, cell lysates and other biological samples. SPB, pulmonary surfactant-associated protein B (gene SFTPB), is a small hydrophobic protein secreted by alveolar type II cells into the pulmonary surfactant that lines the air spaces of the lung. Together with surfactant lipids it lowers surface tension at the air-liquid interface, promoting alveolar stability so that the airspaces do not collapse. It is produced as a precursor that is proteolytically processed into the mature peptide. Inherited SFTPB deficiency causes pulmonary surfactant metabolism dysfunction with severe respiratory distress, and low levels are associated with respiratory distress syndrome in premature infants, while serum levels may rise in lung injury, so SPB is studied as a marker of alveolar damage.
