Description

Rat THP ELISA Kit (Small Sample Volume)

Rat THP ELISA kits are used to detect Tamm-Horsfall Glycoprotein (THP) in serum, plasma, urine and other biological samples. THP (Tamm-Horsfall glycoprotein), now usually called uromodulin and encoded by UMOD, is the most abundant protein in normal urine. It is a glycoprotein produced by epithelial cells of the thick ascending limb of the loop of Henle, where it forms a gel-like filamentous layer on the apical membrane that may contribute to the water barrier. After cleavage it is secreted into urine, where it retards passage of positively charged electrolytes, inhibits salt crystallization, and protects against urinary tract infection by binding type 1 fimbriated E. coli and promoting its clearance. Variants cause autosomal dominant tubulointerstitial kidney disease, and uromodulin levels have been studied as markers of tubular function and kidney disease.
