Description

rT3 ELISA Kit

rT3 ELISA kits are used to detect Reverse Triiodothyronine (rT3) in serum, plasma and other biological samples. Reverse triiodothyronine is an inactive isomer of the thyroid hormone triiodothyronine, with iodine atoms at the 3, 3' and 5' positions rather than 3, 5 and 3'. It is produced mainly in peripheral tissues, where type 3 deiodinase removes an inner-ring iodine from thyroxine, rather than being secreted directly by the thyroid gland, and it is broken down by type 1 and type 2 deiodinases. Production of rT3 rises at the expense of active T3 during illness, fasting, stress and in the fetus, a pattern often described as low T3 syndrome. Measurement of rT3 is therefore used in thyroid research to examine peripheral thyroid hormone metabolism, non-thyroidal illness and the effects of drugs that inhibit deiodination.
