Description

SB ELISA Kit

SB ELISA kits are used to detect Stercobilin (SB) in serum, plasma and other biological samples. Stercobilin (SB) is a tetrapyrrole bile pigment formed in the intestine from the breakdown of haem. Haem from senescent red blood cells is converted to biliverdin and then bilirubin, which is conjugated in the liver and secreted into the gut with bile. There, bacterial enzymes reduce bilirubin to urobilinogen, and then to stercobilinogen, which is oxidised to stercobilin. It is the main pigment responsible for the brown colour of faeces, while a small amount is absorbed and excreted in urine. Pale stools with low stercobilin may indicate biliary obstruction or reduced bilirubin excretion, whereas increased levels may accompany haemolysis, so SB is studied in research on bile pigment metabolism, liver and gallbladder disease and the gut microbiome.
