Description

Human CA15-3 ELISA Kit

Human CA15-3 ELISA kits are used to detect Carbonhydrate Antigen 15-3 (CA15-3) in serum, plasma and other biological samples. CA15-3 is cancer antigen 15-3, a circulating form of the large transmembrane glycoprotein mucin 1 (MUC1), which is expressed on the apical surface of glandular epithelial cells in the breast, lung, pancreas and other tissues. MUC1 is made up of an extracellular alpha subunit with adhesive and anti-adhesive properties that forms a protective layer on epithelial surfaces, and a beta subunit whose cytoplasmic tail takes part in signalling through the ERK, SRC and NF-kappa B pathways. In cancer, MUC1 is overexpressed and aberrantly glycosylated, and the shed antigen enters the blood. CA15-3 is used mainly to monitor response to treatment and detect recurrence in breast cancer, where falling levels suggest a favourable response.
