Description

Human HBF ELISA Kit

Human HBF ELISA kits are used to detect Fetal Hemoglobin (HBF) in serum, plasma and other biological samples. Fetal hemoglobin is the main oxygen-carrying protein of the red blood cells of the fetus, made of two alpha and two gamma globin chains bound to heme. It has a higher oxygen affinity than adult hemoglobin because it binds 2,3-bisphosphoglycerate less strongly, which helps move oxygen across the placenta from maternal to fetal blood. Around birth, production switches from gamma globin to beta globin, and fetal hemoglobin falls to low levels in healthy adults. Persistently high levels, called hereditary persistence of fetal hemoglobin, reduce the severity of sickle cell disease and beta thalassemia, which has made fetal hemoglobin induction a major therapeutic goal. Levels may also rise in some leukemias and during hematopoietic stress.
