Description

Human PP ELISA Kit

Human PP ELISA kits are used to detect Pepsin (PP) in serum, plasma and other biological samples. PP, or pepsin, is the main aspartic endopeptidase of gastric juice. It is secreted by chief cells of the stomach as an inactive zymogen, pepsinogen, which is activated autocatalytically in the acidic stomach by removal of an N-terminal propeptide. Pepsin works best at low pH, cleaving peptide bonds mainly next to aromatic and other hydrophobic residues to begin protein digestion, and it is inactivated at neutral pH. Pepsin detected outside the stomach, for example in airway and laryngeal secretions, has been associated with gastro-oesophageal and laryngopharyngeal reflux, where it may damage epithelium, and serum pepsinogen levels are studied as indicators of gastric mucosal condition such as atrophic gastritis.
