Description

Human UCP2 ELISA

Mitochondrial uncoupling proteins (UCP) are a part of the mitochondrial anion carrier proteins (MACP) family. A function of UCPs is the separation of oxidative phosphorylation from ATP synthesis via energy dissipated as heat; also known as mitochondrial proton leak. In addition, UCPs allows anions to move from the inner to the outer mitochondrial membrane and protons to flow in the opposite direction, reducing the mitochondrial membrane potential in mammalian cells. UCP2 is mainly expressed in skeletal muscle and is thought to play a role in nonshivering thermogenesis, obesity and diabetes. Body mass index quantitative trait locus 4 and hyperinsulinism due to UCP2 deficiency are diseases related to UCP2. Mitochondrial uncoupling proteins and respiratory electron transport, chemiosmotic coupling of ATP synthesis, and heat production by uncoupling proteins are just a few of the UCP2-related processes. UCP3 is a paralog of UCP2.
