Description

Rat 3-MH ELISA Kit

Rat 3-MH ELISA kits are used to detect 3-Methylhistidine (3-MH) in serum, plasma and other biological samples. 3-MH, or 3-methylhistidine, is a methylated derivative of the amino acid histidine that is formed by post-translational methylation of histidine residues in the contractile proteins actin and myosin, mainly in skeletal muscle. When these proteins are broken down, 3-methylhistidine is released, but it cannot be reused for protein synthesis or further metabolised, and so it is excreted largely unchanged in urine. For this reason, its excretion has long been used as an index of the rate of myofibrillar protein degradation and muscle protein turnover. Levels are also influenced by the intake of meat, which contains the compound, so interpretation needs to account for diet. Altered levels have been reported in muscle wasting, sarcopenia, trauma, sepsis, kidney disease and exercise studies.
