Description

Rat Bax ELISA Kit

Rat Bax ELISA kits are used to detect Bcl2 Associated X Protein (Bax) in serum, plasma, tissue homogenates and other biological samples. Bax (Bcl-2-associated X protein) is a pro-apoptotic member of the Bcl-2 family that acts as a key effector of the mitochondrial pathway of apoptosis. In healthy cells it is mostly cytosolic and is continually shuttled back from mitochondria by anti-apoptotic Bcl-xL. Under stress conditions it changes conformation and inserts into the outer mitochondrial membrane, where it oligomerises and permeabilises the membrane, leading to cytochrome c release and caspase activation. The balance between Bax and anti-apoptotic partners such as Bcl-2 therefore helps decide cell fate. Altered Bax expression has been reported in cancers, neurodegeneration and ischaemic injury, and it is a widely used indicator of apoptotic activity.
