Description

Rat CT ELISA Kit

Rat CT ELISA kits are used to detect Calcitonin (CT) in tissue homogenates, cell lysates and other biological samples. CT, or calcitonin, is a 32 amino acid peptide hormone produced mainly by the parafollicular C cells of the thyroid gland and cleaved from a precursor encoded by the CALCA gene, which also yields the carboxyl-terminal peptide katacalcin and the neuropeptide CGRP by alternative processing. Calcitonin causes a rapid but short-lived fall in blood calcium and phosphate by promoting their incorporation into bone, chiefly through inhibition of osteoclast activity, and acts through the calcitonin receptor and the receptor-RAMP2 complex. Katacalcin is a potent plasma calcium-lowering peptide. Calcitonin is released in response to raised calcium, and its concentration may be strongly elevated in medullary thyroid carcinoma, so it is widely used as a tumour marker.
