Description

Rat GS ELISA Kit

Rat GS ELISA kits are used to detect Glutamine synthetase (GS) in serum, plasma, tissue homogenates, cell lysates and other biological samples. GS, or glutamine synthetase (glutamate-ammonia ligase), is an enzyme that catalyses the ATP-dependent condensation of glutamate and ammonia to form glutamine. Its role depends on location: in the brain, mainly in astrocytes, it removes toxic ammonia and converts neurotoxic glutamate into harmless glutamine as part of the glutamate-glutamine cycle, while in the liver it helps remove ammonia in perivenous hepatocytes. It also removes the ammonium generated during heme biosynthesis in erythropoiesis. Inherited deficiency causes congenital glutamine deficiency, with severe brain malformations, seizures and developmental delay. Altered GS expression has been reported in liver tumours and in neurological conditions, so it is studied in nitrogen metabolism and neurobiology.
