Description

Rat UCP1 ELISA Kit (Small Sample Volume)

Rat UCP1 ELISA kits are used to detect Uncoupling Protein 1, Mitochondrial (UCP1) in tissue homogenates, cell lysates, cell culture supernatants and other biological samples. UCP1, also called thermogenin, is a mitochondrial inner membrane protein found in brown and beige adipose tissue. It is responsible for non-shivering thermogenesis. Acting as a long-chain fatty acid and proton symporter, it allows protons to leak back across the inner membrane, so that the energy stored in the proton gradient is released as heat rather than used to make ATP. This process is activated by fatty acids released after adrenergic stimulation, for example in response to cold or diet, and it contributes to the regulation of body temperature and energy balance. UCP1 is a widely used marker of brown and beige fat, and is studied in obesity and metabolic disease.
