Glutathione S-transferases (GSTs) are a group of enzymes that detoxify the body by conjugating a wide range of hydrophobic and electrophilic chemicals with reduced glutathione. There are four classes of soluble GSTs, each with its own chemical, immunological, and structural characteristics: alpha, mu, pi, and theta. The variant protein encoded by the same family of genes is a polymorphic gene that generates functionally diverse GSTP1 variant proteins, some of which are linked to cancer susceptibility and other ailments.
