Description

SPH ELISA Kit

SPH ELISA kits are used to detect Sphingomyelin (SPH) in serum, plasma and other biological samples. Sphingomyelin (SPH) is a sphingolipid composed of a ceramide backbone linked to a phosphocholine head group, and it is the most abundant sphingolipid in mammalian cells. It is enriched in the outer leaflet of the plasma membrane and in the myelin sheath of nerves, and together with cholesterol it forms the ordered lipid microdomains known as rafts. It is synthesised in the Golgi apparatus by sphingomyelin synthases and broken down by sphingomyelinases to ceramide, which is a signalling lipid involved in apoptosis and stress responses. Deficiency of acid sphingomyelinase causes Niemann-Pick disease, in which sphingomyelin accumulates, and altered levels have been linked to atherosclerosis and neurodegeneration, so it is studied in lipidomics and membrane biology.
