Description

Human DES ELISA Kit (Small Sample Volume)

Human DES ELISA kits are used to detect desmosine (DES) in tissue homogenates, cell lysates and other biological samples. Desmosine (DES) is a rare, pyridinium-based cross-linking amino acid that, together with its isomer isodesmosine, joins the polypeptide chains of mature elastin. It is formed from four lysine residues through the action of lysyl oxidase and is unique to elastin, which gives lung, arteries and skin their elasticity and recoil. Because elastin turns over very slowly and the cross-links are released only when elastin is degraded by elastases, free desmosine in blood, sputum and urine is regarded as a specific marker of elastin breakdown. Raised levels have been associated with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, emphysema, aortic aneurysm and other conditions involving elastic fiber damage.
