Description

PGI2 ELISA Kit

PGI2 ELISA kits are used to detect Prostacyclin (PGI2) in serum, plasma and other biological samples. PGI2, or prostacyclin, is a lipid mediator derived from arachidonic acid, formed when cyclooxygenase makes prostaglandin H2 and prostacyclin synthase then converts it. It is produced mainly by vascular endothelial cells and also by smooth muscle cells, and it is unstable, with a half-life of only minutes, as it hydrolyzes to the inactive metabolite 6-keto-PGF1 alpha. PGI2 acts on the IP receptor to raise cyclic AMP, causing potent vasodilation and inhibition of platelet aggregation, so it opposes the actions of thromboxane A2. It also has anti-proliferative and anti-inflammatory effects on smooth muscle and immune cells. Reduced prostacyclin production has been associated with pulmonary arterial hypertension, thrombosis and atherosclerosis, and prostacyclin analogues are used as therapy for pulmonary hypertension.
