Description

Rat a2M ELISA Kit

Rat a2M ELISA kits are used to detect Alpha-2-Macroglobulin (a2M) in serum, plasma, urine and other biological samples. a2M, or alpha-2-macroglobulin, is a large plasma glycoprotein made mainly by the liver and by macrophages and fibroblasts, and it circulates as a tetramer at high concentration. It inhibits all four classes of proteinases by an unusual trapping mechanism: a stretch called the bait region contains cleavage sites for many proteinases, and when one is cleaved the protein changes conformation and enfolds the enzyme. The trapped enzyme stays active against small substrates but is sterically blocked from large ones, and the complex is cleared rapidly by receptor-mediated uptake through LRP1. Altered levels have been associated with liver disease, kidney disease such as nephrotic syndrome, diabetes and Alzheimer disease, so it is studied in proteolysis and inflammation.
