Cellular adaptation to low oxygen is orchestrated by HIF-1alpha and HIF-2alpha, which under normoxia are hydroxylated by PHD2 and degraded via VHL. Stabilised HIFs induce glycolytic (GLUT1, LDHA), angiogenic (VEGFA) and pH-regulating (CA9) target genes.
